Irrational Exhuberence

I have been working on a new piece titled "Irrational Exhuberence," which is to be my senior project piece for the university. It is based on the way that the economy works during and leading into economic downturns. Right now I am working with a quartet of extremely talented women who are doing a great job of embodying the movement and concepts that I have thrown at them.

This has been an interesting challenge so far- my first time creating a piece that is not a solo work with a tricky, technical vocabulary that requires a certain amount of precision from my dancers. Currently, it is a theme and variation based on two basic movement phrases, chopped and changed in several different ways. We have been focusing on three sections: the opening, a multiplier effect and market speculation. It has been interesting to try to find how to translate these terms into movement- for example, speculation is a sort of a spiraling phrase that brings the dancers in a dangerous spiral around a central point.

I still have a lot to do but with such wonderful dancers, it is a good, fun challenge!
